Gratitude - Day Five

Sixlets. Remember these? I loved grabbing a handful of these in the penny candy section of the little grocery store we'd walk to when I was little. Even now, I can't resist the shiny cellophane wrapper with happy candy colors.

Gratitude - Day Three

Having someone to tell my worries to. Nothing against therapists, but I'm talking about friends & family here.

Gratitude - Day Two

Of course I'm thankful for friends, family, health, blah blah blah. But without color, design & frivolity, the world would be much a less interesting place. Sorting through my vintage button collection is like taking a big ol' dose of happy.

Resigned...or Relishing?

Poor Midge. She was always the bad girl when Kathy and I played with our Barbies. Maybe it was the way her eyes were painted.

This card is going to Petra for reminding me that, while I may not be able to do much to stop a Tsunami or war, I can make art. And maybe bring a smile.

There was much to say

** My sister and I each had our own doll with little plastic records that fit into a slot in her side - we always called her Chatty Kathy. I have since learned that this is REALLY Kathy's cousin - Charmin' Chatty.

Nostalgic Toys are a real inspiration for me. Maybe this would be a good theme for more Postcard Project submissions!! Anyone?!

UPDATE - I had not sent this card to anyone. It's going to children's author, Hope Vestergaard, because she shares my love for nostalgic toys.

Things that Donna gave me

Donna is a family friend, and I think about her quite often because I see her in the treasures she has given to me over the years -- things that might not bring a big price on Ebay, but are valuable to me because of their history and because of the spirit in which they were given. A cookie jar from her childhood because she knows I like stripes, some vintage buttons to add to my collection, a locket that had belonged to her Aunt and a glass platter that she had received on her wedding day. Naturally, Donna will be the recipient of this card. Gouache on chipboard.

Reach 2

I wasn't totally satisfied with the previous version so I repainted it with a few changes. I'm sending this one to several people, in the hopes of starting a postcard rally. The incredible collage artist and children's book illustrator Carin Berger, artist and blogger extraordinaire Catherine Thursby will receive this illustration printed on watercolor paper.

Reach

I decided to change the subject to a girl (see sketch below) because I am sending this card to Kyle - who is about to leave her home of 18 years to follow her own star. Gouache on chipboard.

doodling can take you places

I was doodling while I was supposed to be drawing something else (of course). Think I will paint this scene for my next postcard submission.

Danger Will Robinson

Remember the t.v. show "Lost in Space"? (dating myself here...) I had a little polyester number that I just loved. Made feel like I would be right at home in the Robinson's flying saucer. Angela Kline will be receiving this card, as I know she remembers her favorite outfit.

Try to resist puppy dog eyes

I never tire of painting dogs. This puppy is going to visit zany children's
book author & illustrator Laurie Keller. Hopefully, her kitty won't mind.

The Wave

This card is going to Jack, of course. He's been a really good sport about his hair being the subject of a postcard. I look forward to his postcard submission, as he is an excellent doodler.

Word of the Day, Part 2

A Nightingale is the commonly used definition for Philomel, but one reference defined it as a stringed instrument similar to a violin. This bird is flying to Deb & Doug wood, two designer/illustrators with uniquely different & wonderful styles. Instead of watercolor paper, I used chip board. I like the way the gouache sits on the surface of the board.

Word of the Day

Whenever I read the word "inchoate" in an article or story, I have to look up the definition, then promptly forget the meaning and have to look it up again the next time I come across it. Maybe if I associate the word with the picture, I won't forget it...(can anyone say visual learner?)
Chris Roberts-Antieau, choate artist extraordinaire, will be receiving this card.
